How to become a Taxi Driver

Are you interested in becoming a taxi driver, or simply interested in what is required to be one? We’ve attempted to clearly describe the steps below.

  1. Prerequisite requirements:

Basic requirements include a full driving license, completing a DBS check, medical examination and being eligible to work in the U.K. After these basic requirements, applicants are required to complete an application form.

  2. Knowledge Test:

Applicants are also required to complete a knowledge test. The test is designed to ensure applicants have a thorough knowledge of the operating area. Questions may test information about local destinations (e.g. public houses & tourist attractions) as well as information about local roads. Further, the ability to accurately calculate a fare for different situations will be examined.

  3. Driving Test:

Our authority, Central Bedfordshire Council, requires new applicants to complete a 40 minute driving examination to ensure a high level of competency behind the wheel. Further, if applying for a Hackney Carriage License, drivers will need to undertake Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training.

  4. Additional Training:

Drivers may need to undertake additional training; for example, Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness (CSE) Training. This ensures drivers are best equipped to safeguard all passengers.

  5. Access to an appropriate vehicle:

New drivers will need to have access to a suitable vehicle for either Private Hire or Hackney Carriage use. Drivers are able to supply their own vehicles or use the vehicle of an approved operator. Vehicles must meet strict council set requirements and be tested regularly to ensure safety standards are upheld.
